Mermaids: A Dive into Friendship

Mermaids: A Dive into Friendship

Introduction

Today, I want to dive into a new creation titled  "Mermaids." This deep dive aims to explore the technicalities of the video art, delve into the contextual nuances surrounding the creation of this masterpiece, and dissect the emotional resonances of friendship embedded within.

Form

Mermaids" isn't your average video art; it's a dynamic dance of visuals and sounds. The incorporation of parallax introduces a multi-dimensional aspect to the piece. Parallax, the apparent displacement of the observed object due to the change in the position of the observer, is deftly manipulated to create a sense of depth. The layering of three cellphone photographs and a screenshot into five planes and seven layers results in a visual tapestry that unfolds dynamically.

The animated 3D camera mimics the settings of the base cellphone camera setting, seamlessly translating real-world parameters into the digital realm. Such precision lends an authenticity to the visual narrative, blurring the lines between the captured moment and its digital recreation. This amalgamation of techniques is what I am interested in. It reminds me of artists like Deborah Roberts, Lorna Simpson, and Njidka Akunyili Crosby. In this piece, I add a carefully crafted soundscape by Flowers in Narnia. The track features a distinct bass line melody, high-pitched piano notes, soft synth and organ chords, and the gentle strums of a Spanish guitar, enchants the ears. To add polyrhythms, a stanza of verse weaves through the melody, bringing a harmonious blend of sight and sound that plays on a loop.

Context

Now, let's peek behind the curtain. The chosen photo for "Mermaids" was no random pick. It's a thoughtful selection which holds historical and personal significance.  The location, the Place de la Carrière in Nancy, France, is steeped in architectural history, forming part of the 18th-century ensemble envisioned by Stanisław I Leszczyński. This regal setting, with the Place Stanislas and Arc Héré behind me and the Palais du Gouvernement in front, serves as the canvas for our artistic exploration.

The photo captures a moment in time where human bonds were strengthened—imbueing the photograph with shared moments of intimacy and reflection. A prior sojourn through Parc de la Pépinière set the stage for candid conversations about life and love. These personal connections and architectural marvels lay the foundation for the conceptual depth of "Mermaids."

Let's dive deeper into the heart of "Mermaids" - the content. At its core, this artwork is a celebration of friendship. In a world where emotional expression among friends, especially between the same sex, often takes a back seat, "Mermaids" brings this unspoken camaraderie to the forefront. Inspired by personal experiences and moments of reconnection, I delve into the universal desire for mutual love and connection. The poignant image of friends reuniting, sharing affection, and expressing love becomes the muse for a piece that encourages us all to reach out, express love, and overcome the fear of rejection. It's an ode to friendship, a visual poem that beckons us to cherish those connections that make our hearts swim with joy.

In further dissecting the emotional effect, consider the thematic connection to mermaids. These mythical creatures, with their dual nature of ethereal beauty and aquatic mystery, serve as metaphors for the complexity of human connections.

Conclusion:

In the vast ocean of art, "Mermaids" stands as a testament to the power of visuals and sounds converging into a narrative that goes beyond the surface. It's an invitation to embark on a journey where every loop reveals a new nuance and a fresh ripple of emotion. So, next time you find yourself yearning for a dip into the sea of emotions, let "Mermaids" be your guiding light. In the end, I wanted friendship to take center stage, and have every stroke of my visual brush to whispers tales of love, shared moments and universal connections.
